The type of Visa most students apply for to be able to study in the US is the F1 Visa. The F1 Visa is a nonimmigrant Visa which permits you to enter the United States and study there for as long as the course lasts. After your course ends you are asked to leave the country but you can choose to apply for the immigrant Visa if you wish to stay and change your status.
