As a student, both permits are perfect opportunities in the United States to study without limitations. The major difference, though, comes as you decide when and how you want to work before or after your studies. The F-1 visa is typically the best choice for this, since it allows you to work off campus in your profession and also allows you to work until your studies are done for one to two years. The J-1 only allows you to work on campus, by comparison. However, for the F-1, before qualifying for off-campus jobs, you would need to wait one year.
